A surgical drain is a device the surgeon places to prevent the collection of pus, blood, and air or monitor the surgical site. The drain consists of a tube that is inserted into the surgical site, with the free end outside the patient's body. The free end may be open (open type drain) or closed (closed type drain); in the closed type, generally, the drain end is connected to a bag, tube or bottle.
