Cardiac PCI is a coronary artery disease treatment used to open blockages in the coronary arteries due to atherosclerosis, which is the buildup of cholesterol deposits (called plaque) in the arteries. PCI is also referred to as percutaneous coronary intervention or cardiac angioplasty. This involves inserting a small, flexible tube catheter into the body to the problem artery.
Atherosclerosis can develop over many years and cause narrowing of the bloodstream, reducing the amount of blood reaching the heart. When the heart is not getting the blood supply it needs, damage can occur if not addressed immediately.
- Cardiac PCI uses several methods to allow increased blood flow to the heart:
- Balloon angioplasty: a special balloon is inflated in the blocked coronary artery to flatten the plaque and improve blood flow, after which the balloon is deflated and removed.
- Stent: inserting a stent or heart ring inside the artery after angioplasty to keep the artery open.
- Atherectomy: the blocked part of the artery is cut with a small tool using a catheter
